A Court of Thorns and Roses book 3
Feyre is now acting as a spy in the Spring Court. Tamlin is as strange as ever; he’s not even mysterious, mysterious would suggest exciting. Rather, he’s overbearing and dull. It makes me wonder what Feyre even saw in him in book 1.
The pace is slow while Feyre’s gathering intelligence and this continues until about the halfway mark. It’s all planning, research, and training. Plus the long and drawn-out issue with Elain, her gentle sister, got frustrating when they wrap her in cotton wool and walk on eggshells around her.
If you were looking for lots of romance and steamy times then think again. That aspect is certainly on the back burner in this book. There are some scenes, but nowhere near as intense or steamy as book two.
The pace varies at different points. Sometimes it feels too sedate and you want it to pick up and move on. Then at other times, there’s plenty of action and you can’t get enough. The final battle scene is a prime example. This is the climax and it goes on for what feels like forever. There are times when the action even stops and the characters start having long conversations when they’re supposed to be in the middle of a battle that will determine their lives.
The author also did an annoying storytelling ploy to allow the reader to experience what was happening to different characters without changing POV. It just felt too contrived and unnatural. I think I almost screamed, “Get on with it!”, at one point.
I did, however, enjoy the romantic subplot for Cassian and Nesta. Nesta may be a bit… erm… unpleasant but the tension between her and Cassian was great. Despite my reservations about this one, I’m tempted top read more just for those characters.
Overall this book lacked the same feels as the second and the romantic aspects were less prominent. But putting that aside, I felt like the pace was too uneven. I really liked some parts while others left me praying for them to move on.
