Bianca’s Book Review: “Beautiful Redemption” by Jamie McGuire

Maddox Brothers Book Two

I’ve moved on quickly to the next Maddox Brothers book and it was so easy to read. I like the author’s writing style, it flows so well without any jarring syntax that pulled me out of the book.

I also loved Liis straight away. She’s a strong-willed character, a determined and dedicated FBI Agent. I love her straight-talking and no-nonsense approach.

Liis’s transferred from another office across the country and wants nothing more but to climb the FBI career madder. Before she’s due to start she’s in low spirits following the move, which included dumping her fiancé, and has a one-night stand with a hot guy she meets in a bar.

Guess what? He’s her new boss, Special Agent Thomas Maddox, and he’s a total hard ass, office ogre, perpetually grumpy type. The tension is great from the get-go and the steam is ramped up before the end of chapter one. But Liis’s not the helpless “what will I do?” or overly sappy type regarding sleeping with her boss. She sets it straight, she’s a big girl – it was a mistake, but they can be professional. Thomas’s a bit stumped by her attitude even though that’s what he knows he needs to do too.

The first half has such great feels, I just loved it and I flew through the chapters. However, things took a turn for the worse at the halfway mark.

Things get more complicated when Thomas and Liis must pose as a couple for Thomas’s brother’s second wedding. They have to convince Travis to join the FBI and go undercover if he wants to avoid a prison sentence.

I love the bit when Thomas explains why he picked Liis to pose as his girlfriend rather than one of their colleagues because he says she is similar to his brother’s type of girl:

‘“I lack finesse?” I asked pointing to the center of my chest. “Are you fucking serious?” I craned my neck. “Have you met Val?”’

High five, Liss!

I got frustrated at the halfway mark because they were constantly arguing about the same thing repeatedly. Liis is afraid to get involved and she struggles to deal with Thomas’s feelings about his ex-girlfriend who broke his heart. Liis is always trying to push Thomas away but suddenly he’s relentless and he won’t let her run.

I also wanted more love scenes between them. What scenes there were were great and passionate, but I wanted more.

As a result, I wanted her to “get over it” and wanted to rush through to the end so they could get together.
