The Clecanians Series Book 2
I enjoyed the first book so I can’t understand why it’s taken me so long to read the next in the series.
We’re taken straight into the action. Alice has been kidnapped by aliens and wakes up in a medical unit. The Clecanians are still desperate to repopulate their species and an insurgent element has started to experiment on humans.
Luka is also being held captive as a test subject, and there’s a mating bond between him and Alice.
Again, there’s great world-building with balanced description and narrative. However, the pace lagged a bit in the middle. There are lots of planning discussions about the insurgents but I felt it distracted from the building relationship between Luka and Alice. I think after the intensity of the opening chapters, the lull was disappointing.
Luka is so desperate for things to work with his mate, he comes on too strong. Alice is resistant to accepting the bond. While you think she’ll make him grovel she kind of gives in at the first kiss. Then he messes up again, but he’s determined to win her over.
Alice is one of those people who’s too nice for their own good, and manipulative jerks take advantage of her kindness. Since the alien kidnapping, she doesn’t want to be seen as a pushover anymore. So, Alice fights against the pull of the bond and doesn’t want to allow her feelings for Luka to override what’s best for her. This ramps up the tension nicely.
The plot picked up again when they start to spend more time together. There were so many endearing scenes where get to know each other and the slow burn flares to hot flames.
Luka is so cute. He’s smart with a quirky sense of humour, and oh-so protective. He’s never had to work hard for anything before but he tries so hard to win over Alice with picnics and romantic stories.
I didn’t enjoy this as much as the first book because of the lull in tension and the slower pace. However, the romantic elements still made it a nice read and I will probably finish the series.
