Fun For 15 Mins

My last writing prompt focused on conveying character through action. This prompt asks to do the opposite and only describe physical features.

Your main character is at a party. Describe your character’s physical features and the features of everyone else there.

Lydia followed Lady Ravenwood into the overcrowded ballroom and watched her walk with a regal grace that exuded superiority over all those in attendance.  Lady Ravenwood’s royal blue gown shimmered in the candlelight as she moved through the crowds.  Lydia’s own gown, in comparison, was a drab shade of dove grey, with no embellishments.  Lady Ravenwood also wore a gaudy set of gold and sapphire drop earrings and matching necklace.  Her grey hair was topped with a royal blue turban complete with plumes of matching blue feathers which bobbed as she moved.

Lydia had always tried to look her best but now she felt she had become a dull imitation of herself. Her hair was scraped back into a knot at the crown of her head, her blonde highlights long gone to reveal the mouse brown natural tones.  Lydia knew she was not supposed to draw attention to herself and in this outfit she was certainly not going to catch anyone’s eye.

Lydia looked at some of the other ladies present with envy as her eyes travelled down their sumptuously silk covered bodies.  The unmarried ladies all seemed to wear gowns of white muslin with modest necklines while the married ladies preferred a lower cut gown.  Lydia though the Countess of Sutton would fall out of her gown if she bent over but maybe that was her intention, especially the way she kept batting her eyelids and leaned forward toward Lord Brocklehurst. He, in turn, couldn’t seem to raise his eyes above her neck line, not that he had much choice.

Lydia stood behind Lady Ravenwood a she lowered herself into a chair near the doors that opened on to the terrace.  Lady Ravenwood and her friends were all the same; the same gaudy jewellery, the same ostentatious dresses with far too many ruffles and lace.
