My Review: “Cold-hearted Rake” by Lisa Kleypas

Book One in The Ravenels Series

I thought I would have a go at one of the series I have always wanted to read by best selling historical romance author, Lisa Kleypas.  I have read the Wallflower series which I loved. The Ravenels is set about thirty years later.

In Cold-hearted Rake, Devon Ravenel unexpectedly inherits an earldom following the death of his cousin.  When he arrives at his new estate he finds it in disrepair and in need of funds, not to mention his cousin’s widow and three sisters.

Lady Kathleen Trenear was only married for three days before her husband’s sudden death and now has to deal with an uncertain future at the hands of the new earl.

As an introduction to The Ravenels this novel is about familial love and support in the face of adversity.  Devon and Kathleen do not get along at first despite their attraction.  Kathleen battles her guilt over the death of her husband while Devon does not want to lose his freedom to the responsibilities of his new family.

This was an enjoyable read and a good start to the series. The really interesting characters here are the twins, Cassandra and Pandora and Devon’s irreverent brother West. I hope they all get their own story as the series progresses.
