My Review: “One Moment Please” by Amy Daws

Lynsey Jones is a post-grad student who has spent weeks finishing her thesis in a hospital cafeteria because that’s the only place she seems to be able to knuckle down and get it done. The day she finishes, she’s approached by the hot, if grumpy, doctor who has scowled at her every day.

Since he first saw her, Dr Josh Richardson has been drawn to the woman tapping away at the laptop in the hospital cafeteria. Her presence unsettles him. He doesn’t do feelings, but she seems to rouse all sorts of them within him.

This story starts with a bang and immediately jumps into tension-filled bickering/flirtatious banter, whichever you prefer to call it. The immediate conflict sucked me in. Josh is really arrogant and rude, and provokes Lynsey to retaliate with equally obnoxious behaviour. It all covers up the true attraction between them. The hot banter soon transforms into hot sex that burns up the pages.

Lynsey admits to herself: “One minute, I want to knock him into next week, and the next, I want him to take me right in the middle of the street.”

This can only end one way. Even when they are getting it on, the scene is heavy with sarcastic quips.

The plot was so well conceived and delivered. The scene where they both discover she is pregnant after their one night together is both hilarious and heart-stopping with intensity at the same time.

Josh is desperate to distance himself from others, but despite his reservations he stands by Lynsey and supports her in every way. The small trickle of backstory allows the reader to piece things together as to why he behaves this way. It’s really well done without spelling it out to the reader.

He fights his attraction and growing feelings for Lynsey and their unborn child at every stage. He has become so accustomed to pushing others away, he doesn’t realise he’s letting them in regardless.

Josh can’t understand what’s happening: “How did this happen? How did I go from low-key stalking her in a hospital cafeteria to arguing over baby room furnishings and fucking her like it’s my last day on earth?” It endeared him to me because as the reader we can see it coming a mile away.

This is a really good, heart-felt love story. It ticks all my boxes for conflict, hot sex, a solid and well-delivered plot, and brilliantly witty dialogue. The characters are believable and relatable, so honestly human it’s impossible not to fall head over heels for them.
