Penn Scully and Daria Followhill love to hate each other. He’s poor and barely managing to get by, while she’s rich and privileged. Their reckless action when they were kids has serious consequences for them both. Four years later he’s kicked out of his home and fostered by her family.
The characters are hard to like. They have deep emotional problems. Daria punishes herself for what she did to his family. Penn wants to hate her for what she is, but he can’t seem to manage it. They have an attraction they cannot resist. They are horrible to each other, really spiteful, and sometimes it’s hard to read.
Daria is really horrid to herself too. She really plays on the cold, rich bitch identity with everyone. It’s a cover; she feels alone because she believes she’s overlooked and unloved by her mother. Some of her behaviour is hard to justify because she deliberately, and repeatedly, shatters the dreams of others as an act of revenge. Despite that, it is difficult to dislike her.
This is a gut wrenching read crammed with emotional drama that will have you riding the roller coaster of love, angst, and teenage dreams alongside the characters.
Overall, the message is meaningful. Whether struggling to pay for food or being able to fulfil your every materialistic dream, we all have insecurities and problems. If we just open our eyes to the bigger picture we may realise that things are not as they seem.
