Girl Meets Duke Book 1
I’ve read these out of order. In book 2 there is a surly and combative cat. I hope to see more of him in this book. It’s also another re-working of the beauty and the beast theme, and the marriage of convenience trope.
Emma Gladstone was cut off by her self righteous, clergyman, father and forced to earn a living as a seamstress. When she visits the Duke of Ashbury, demanding payment for her work on his former fiancé’s wedding gown, she is instead offered a marriage of convenience.
The Duke Of Ashbury, Ash, has been left scared both physically and mentally after Waterloo. Fuming at fate, and resentful of his new appearance, he needs a wife desperate enough to marry a disfigured duke.
Ash struck a chord with me. He is bitter, resentful, and displays such caustic wit I cannot help but adore him. I love a man who says such things as: “I like to know the names of the people I despise. I keep them in a little book and pore over it from time to time, whilst sipping brandy and indulging in throaty, ominous laughter.”
Emma is also full of sardonic humour and repartee. The whole novel flows with the witty banter between the characters. It makes it such an easy read, helped along by the eccentric secondary characters who will no doubt be given more limelight in later stories. Plus, I should not forget the menagerie of quirky animals. Yes, the cat, Breeches, does not disappoint and gets up to some violent devilry at the most inopportune times.
I devoured and loved this book. The dialogue, the characters, the plot, all knit together to make a heartwarming historical romance to get lost in, and despair upon when you reach the end because you could happily ensconce with the characters and never get bored. If it were a blanket, it would be your favourite, cosiest one, and perfect for snugging down with on a cold winter evening.

If you like a bit of humour and wit, I recommend Tessa Dare. Elizabeth Hoyt’s Maiden Lane Series also has some humour, but is a bit darker in terms of theme. I still have to read them all, but the first five are good.
