My Review: The “Fae’s Captive” Series by Lily Archer

I’ve posted my reviews of these books together as some of them, both the novella and my review, are quite short.

Fae’s Captive

Book 1

Taylor is a diligent college student who gets transported to another world where Leander Gladion, King of the winter Fae, claims she is his fated mate.

I was totally sucked into the story. I was along for the ride with Taylor as she was transported to an alternate realm,  it wasn’t made clear how at this point, by her roommate and a mysterious doppelgänger.

In the other world, humans are slaves, and she’s immediately abused by her master. Then the king of the winter Fae claims her as his mate, but she states she can’t stay and must find a way home, because she’s got college finals and stuff. Lol!

I loved this story immediately with the magic, the fantastical creatures, and the fated mates trope. I also found it sweet that they couldn’t understand each other. He didn’t speak English, as it’s a only spoken by the slaves and a small few. They need others to translate for them, except for the occasions where he uses sign language try to explain stuff when she freaks out about what’s going on. Leander’s also into plenty of PDA to comfort her and reassure her. Oh, it’s so sweet and endearing.

Before I knew it, I’d reached 70% and didn’t want it to end because there was still so much I needed to know. So, I should have realised it’s a novella, and thank God, the story continues.

Road to Winter

Fae’s Captive Book 2

This novella is even shorter than the first and I wasn’t sure what to write about this. It’s really more like the intermediate chapters in a full novel, rather than a story in its own right.

As it goes, the characters are learning more about each other. Taylor now speaks Fae which while making the writing easier for the author, some of the cute aspects I enjoyed in the first book are lost.

The cliffhanger ending encouraged me to read on. I’m enjoying it, but it’s very stop/start. I just want to read on without having to download another few hundred pages. It feels like a Wattpad series, rather than a book.

Bite of Winter

Fae’s Captive Book 3

Where do I start? Again, this is more like intermediate chapters in a full novel rather than a novella.

In this instalment, Taylor gets a foul mouthed unicorn excited by stroking his horn. The steam levels rise from zero to sultry. Taylor and Leander finally seal the deal and become bonded mates before it all falls apart. We’ve given a few clues about where she comes from, but it seems all the answers are being kept for the next book. It ends on another hook to entice the reader to download the next one.

Beyond the Mountain

Fae’s  Captive Book 4

I was immediately pleased that this book is much longer. Here, we are at the conclusion of Taylor’s and Lander’s story, and it was worth the wait.

It all happened here, we discovered who Taylor really was, and she must choose her sides. There’s magic, battles, plenty of sexy times, an internal battle between good and evil, plus some heart wrenching moments thrown in.

It was really good. Leander continues to combine the possessive, authoritative alpha role with being decent and kind.  Taylor fights to find her true self and is willing to sacrifice everything to save the world from evil.

This is the best out of the first four in the series. The action, the magic, and the heat, all combine to make this book worth reading the, slightly dragging, earlier instalments. There’s four more books in this series, and can’t help but think perhaps some of them could be combined for a more satisfying, longer read, than the repeated breaks and cliffhangers.
