Victorian Rebels Book 2
Christopher Argent is a lethal assassin who accepts a contract to kill actress, Millicent LeCour. Millicent is apparently dangerous and is trying to blackmail the person who wants her dead. The reader, however, is in no doubt that not everything is as it seems.
Christopher was born in Newgate prison, raised amongst filth and criminals. He endured abuse and witnessed the rape and murder of his mother while still a child. However, he survived the torment and focused on learning Kung Fu from an older Chinese inmate.
Argent is usually cold, unfeeling, and controlled, but Millie makes him feels things, makes him lose control, and he struggles to deal with the changes in himself.
He goes to his fellow Newgate survivor, and sometimes employer, Dorian Blackwell for advice and I loved his reply:
“It’s madness, at first, or maybe always. It’s … possession and fear, passion and joy. It’s indescribably sweet, and utterly terrifying. It’s different for everyone, I imagine.”
Millie has her own secrets, something that takes the reader by surprise, as well as Argent.
While the author writes the tortured hero well, is heavy on the angst, and combines it all with a nice mix of heat and steam, I felt the ending was dragged out unnecessarily. I got a bit frustrated with the repetitive twists and turns. Millie was kidnapped, but Argent rescued her. Then he let her go, but surprise, she’s in danger yet again and he has to save her, again. I would have also preferred a longer and more in-depth make up/resolution of their issues to round up the story. I was desperate to get to the end to find out what happened. Then it was all wrapped up within the final two percent.
In conclusion, while the plot was a little lacking in places, the angst, general feels, and the steam made up for it.
