I held off on this because I was put off a bit by Daphne’s actions in the previous book. Anyway, here we go.
Anthony Bridgerton has decided to take a wife. Who better than the diamond of the season, Miss Edwina Sheffield? But to marry her, he’ll have to win over her sister, who happens to despise him.
Katherine Sheffield is quite happy to be the older sister of the season’s diamond debutante. She’s determined to see her sister marries for love. In her opinion, Anthony Bridgerton is a rake and the last man who could make her sister happy.
So to win Edwina, Anthony must also charm her sister. Once they get to know one another, it doesn’t take long for for them both to realise they were wrong.
I love Kate. She believes she lacks social graces and will never find a husband, but she’s okay with that. Large social gatherings are not here forte, she’s blunt and speaks her mind, a little too often. This just makes me love her more, it’s a long time since I connected so well with a character.
The tension between the two is excellent and their attempts to deliberately annoy one another made me chuckle repeatedly. What more could you want? A mischievous dog, perhaps? Well, there’s one of those too.
Here’s an example of one of their amusing arguments about his desire to marry her sister:
“If you were Edwina’s brother, “ Kate said with deadly accuracy, “would you allow her to marry a man like you?”
He did not speak for a very long moment, long enough so that the silence rang awkwardly in his own ears. Finally he said, “That is beside the point.”
All the aspects of a traditional regency love story are included: balls, a house party, loveable characters with personal issues they need to overcome to find love. It’s a feel-good read, with quirky humour, and a strong emphasis on family support. The heat levels are medium, so, if you like it very steamy, you may be disappointed.
