My review: “Waiting for Tom Hanks” by Kerry Winfrey

Annie Cassidy loves rom-coms so much it’s affected her ability to find a man. She’s looking for a rom-com man, rather than a real man.

Her friend, Chloe, sums up Annie’s dilemma in a nutshell, “I always think you’re exaggerating, but you’re literally in love with a fictional man. You know those movies aren’t real, right? They’re made up! I’ve watched about ten thousand more rom-coms than I ever wanted to see because of you, and I can definitely say that they’re all bullshit.”

Yeah, part of me believes that, but as I’m reading this book I cannot deny that part of me is on Annie’s side and wants her the meet her perfect guy. I looked forward the many cute, romantic, and hilarious moments that are bound to occur on the path to true love. I was not disappointed.

Annie is determined not to settle for anything less than she deserves which, in her mind, is a guy who embodies the characteristics often portrayed by Tom Hanks in rom-coms.

Annie starts working as an assistant to the director of a rom-com filming in her city. She has to contend with the lead actor, Drew Danforth. He happens to be gorgeous, but she believes him to be a jerk.

This novel is brimming with feel-good vibes. It’s warm and cozy. It’s like cuddling up on the sofa in pjs with some comfort food, and watching the movies mentioned in the book.

The unexpected twist is a brilliant change in what was a story that follows all the predictable tropes of a rom-com. Not forgetting, it’s full of nostalgia and 90s film references.

An excellent, heart-warming romantic comedy. Sweet PG 13.
