My review: “Wicked and the Wallflower” by Sarah MacLean

Part of the Bareknuckle Bastards series

Wallflower, Lady Felicity Faircloth, is desperate to be welcomed back into the arms of high society. To do this she makes a deal with Devil, king of London’s dark underbelly, who promises to turn her into a desirable temptress. Unknown to Felicity, Devil has his own plans for her.

I love this trope; the pursuit of revenge goes awry when the characters fall in love with the tool of their vengeance.

Unfortunately, it was a bit difficult to get into. The dialogue was quite hard to follow. It was intense, sometimes diverting onto unexpected tangents. Once I got used to it though, I was able to immerse myself in the story.

Tension is high from the start, with instant attraction on both sides. There are a few sizzling build-up scenes, but there is only one really hot scene which takes place on the rooftops of London and feels very romantic.

Devil has a swoon worthy line:

“You are the most remarkable woman I’ve ever known, and if I have only this moment-this present-with you, then I wish to make you burn until you’ve made the stars jealous of your heat.”

I like all the characters in the novel and I am inspired to read the rest of the series because the sub-plot involving them is unresolved.  Plus, it is set in the alternative world of the more nefarious parts of early Victorian London, rather than glamorous balls and parties of high society, and it makes a nice change.
