As this is a writing blog I thought it was time to post some of my writing. I’ve chosen a writing prompt then allowed myself 15 minutes to write something. Here it is.
A young woman/man stumbles across a dead body in the woods. What does she/he do?
The dog barking made me turn toward the noise.
“What’s wrong, boy? Come here!” I shouted.
The barking continued so I decide to find out what was causing the problem. I hoped he wasn’t stuck in a hole as I just don’t have the time today. I reluctantly clambered up the uneven ground on the hill and pushed through the dense bushes, I kept my head down and tried not to catch my face on the sharp branches.
“What’s wrong, Rufus?” As I raised my head to see what he was doing, a pair of feet dangling in mid air caused me to stop dead in my tracks.
“Oh, shit!”
Rufus had stopped barking and was now whimpering at my feet as my eyes slowly moved up the body that was hanging limply from the tree branch. I stood frozen for what seemed like an eternity, unable to do anything except stare at the bloated, blue face of Mr Morton, a neighbour from up the street. Do something, I told myself.
I reached into my back pocket and pulled out my mobile phone with trembling hands. Please have a signal, please have a signal.
Forcing my thumbs to work I dialled and was greeted with, “What’s your emergency?”
“I need an ambulance and the police now!” I blurted. “Mr Morton has hung himself in the woods and I don’t know what to do!”
“Ok, we’ll get someone out to you as soon as possible. Can you tell me where you are?”
How are they so calm? Right, where the hell am I again?
