Hi Krys! I’m so pleased to share your new release. I know you were inspired to write this story by events in your hometown. Tell us more.

I’ve been trying to come up with a way to explain how I came up with the idea of Angel in the Dark and I’ve found this is the only way to describe it.

First off, I want to say, Angel in the Dark is NOT a true story.

Angel in the Dark

There was a tragic incident that happened in my hometown last October that involved three officers and a lone gunman, who lured the officers to his home. The gunman called in a violent domestic abuse call which two of the officers were assigned to. A third officer volunteered to go with as he only had fifteen minutes left of his shift.

After they arrived on the scene no one had answered the door, then when they turned around they were shot from behind with a military grade rifle. Of the three officers, two were killed and one of them was injured, crawled to the vehicle, got in position, and had no choice but to kill the gunman.

Many of us in town were horrified by the actions that happened that night in October. Some of us struggled with it because this was the first time in seventy years an officer in our town was killed in the line of duty.

A couple days after the incident an idea came to me to write a story. I read in our town’s Facebook group that the children of the gunman were being treated horribly as was his ex-wife. They were being treated as if they were the ones who killed those officers.

Without drawing attention to my town, I thought of an idea where the victim’s families of a horrible crime could possibly unite together and console one another of sorts amid a town that was still grieving and pointing their fingers at people who aren’t necessarily to blame. Even though the actions of the gunman were vile, I still feel the family members are still victims because they were not responsible for what their family member had done.

So therefore, this book is not based on a true story. Benji and Porter’s story was inspired by the tragedy but not the actual event. I’m hoping those who read this understand my meaning.

Author’s Note: Names of people involved in the incident as well as the hometown were not used to protect the identity of all involved in this tragedy.

Excerpt from Angel in the Dark

The sound of piano keys pounding made me even more curious as it drew me further down the hall. The notes were somber, as if filled with pain and loss.

I stepped into the open doorway.

And there she was.

Her wild raven-black curls flew around her shoulders and down her back as she played “Nothing Else Matters” by Metallica. She had long, thin fingers. They dashed over the keys. She didn’t need sheet music before her. Porter moved her hair out of the way with one hand, not stopping in her play. The music continued flowing just as before. During the crescendo, I thought I saw a tear streaming down the side of her face. She quickly wiped it away and stroked the last notes from the keys.

After she finished, Porter looked in the doorway. Perhaps she sensed someone was watching her? She blinked and did a double take. Porter pursed her lips before she stood. “Stalking me, Officer Branson?” I think the words were meant to be in a teasing tone, but they came out harsher than necessary.

I let the question roll off me and shrugged. I straightened my pants to hide the hard-on that nearly revealed itself while I watched her play. “I was finishing my lunchroom duties and followed the sound of music. It’s lunchtime.”
