Am I the only person freaked out by the opening chapter? Here we have a professional footballer (the soccer kind of football) whose pre-match ritual is self-service pleasure in the shower while he daydreams about himself scoring a goal. This made me squirm so much, and not in a good way.
Anyway, after that initial discomfort, the plot got going and I enjoyed it.
Camden Harris, from a family of football superstars, suffers what could be a career ending injury. He’s a total player, both on and off the pitch, until he claps eyes on his doctor.
Indie Porter is the child genius surgeon assigned to Camden. She has serious intimacy issues as a result of neglectful and cold parenting, and she’s so focused on her career that she has no social life. She’s still a virgin and desperate to pop that cherry.
Camden Harris is the perfect candidate for a no-strings horizontal playmate, but Indie doesn’t want to breach the doctor-patient relationship. However, Camden Harris proves too tempting to resist.
I thought Camden was so cute the way he chased Indie and the reader gets all the fuzzies because we know he’s going to fall hard. I particularly enjoyed the scene when she texts him while she’s at a nightclub. He doesn’t like it and has to find her to lay his claim, and I melted when he thought:
“But when Indie’s face is bare, she’s a secret kind of beautiful only noticeable to those who care enough to look. I liked that I was the only one looking then.”
I liked both Camden (despite the opening scene) and Indie. They both felt fleshed out and relatable. It was nice to have the heroine as the one who was uncertain about the relationship and pulled back, then had to do some serious grovelling.
There were plenty of steamy, sexy times, too, which had to be extended to more than one night because they both enjoyed it too much.
I think you’ll enjoy this if you’re looking for a slightly different sports romance set in the U.K.
