Maiden Lane Book 7
I’ve spent quite a bit of time trying to think about what to write in this review. The thing is, this book was not bad, but it didn’t make me feel a great deal either.
The characters didn’t draw me in even though Apollo, a convicted murderer on the run following his escape from Bedlam, should have had me raring to get behind his plight and cheer him on.
Lily, a single mother who needs to provide for her child even though she is an out-of-work actress and playwright, also didn’t draw me in. I didn’t feel connected enough to the characters to care deeply about what happened to either of them.
The suspense surrounding Apollo’s false conviction and their attempts to find the real killer was the only thing that kept me going. The heat was moderate to low for most of the book – not surprising when a young child is hanging around. Once they get together, however, there’s plenty of hot and heavy action that’s steamy and sensual.
I felt this book lacked the adventure and action of the earlier novels in the series. I loved the Ghost of St Giles elements of the previous books, and the daring vigilante is glaringly absent here.
What did make a nice change though was that Apollo, while being large in stature and godlike in physique as well as in name, is not your standard handsome hero. He’s described as almost brutishly unattractive and fearsome. Yet, Lily sees past all that to the sweet and sensitive guy beneath.
This is a nice, easy going, and slow burn romance with a steady plot. You’ll enjoy it if you like cute kids and mischievous dogs getting in the way of the budding romance and a little suspense thrown in.
