My Review: “Broken Knight” by L J Shen

All Saints’ High Book 2

Luna Rexroth is a selective mute since her mom abandoned her as a child. She has a high IQ and photographic memory which makes her brilliant, yet she lacks confidence in herself, and finds it hard to accept the love of others.

Knight Cole is adopted, but his family are everything that is loving and supportive. His mum has a terminal illness which he struggles to deal with, and his reliance on alcohol is taking over his life.

The story is crammed with endless angst. They both have fear of abandonment. They love each other, and both know it, but they let the fear of hurting each other stop them being together.

Luna struggles most to make the move beyond friendship, and Knight reacts like a typical teenage boy. If she doesn’t want him, he’ll show her others do, but he doesn’t follow through, and still manages to push Luna in the opposite direction. The first half is just about them trying to come to terms with their feelings for each other, trying to stay friends, but hurting each other endlessly.

If you read this, you’ve got to be in it for the long haul. It’s a constant back and forth of them pining for each over, arguing, then accepting they should be together, only for something stupid to tear them apart again. It’s usually their own angst ridden teenage behaviour. I got to the point where I was just waiting for the next way they would sabotage the possibility of a reconciliation between them.

This book will have you pulling your hair out as well as tearing up. There’s also the strong familial support and interference element that runs through the other work I’ve read by Shen. It’s about more than finding the love of your life and refusing to let them go. It’s also about how to live with loss, accept that life is not perfect, and the understanding we need to make the most of it.
