After his father’s financial mismanagement, Lord Tristan Camberwick’s estate is failing. Despite the viscount’s best efforts to improve his income, it seems he has no choice but to find a rich wife. Unfortunately, Tristan’s heart only wants Philippa.

An invitation to a Christmas house party should allow Pippa and Tristan to find wealthy spouses. But how can they court a suitable partner when the only one they want stands across the room looking back?

He should not have come. But, as usual, the lure of seeing her had made him behave like a fool, and there she was—his heart’s desire.

What a long summer it had been since they had said their farewells in London before returning to the country—he still a bachelor and she still a spinster.

You cannot marry Miss Selverton because she is poor, like you. That was the crux of the problem, and they both knew it. Unable to marry each other but unwilling to marry another. Well, that was the case for him. Whether it was for her would remain to be seen.

His heart swelled as he took in her wrinkled skirts and the lines around her mouth and eyes. Her curls drooped but still gleamed. She would always be beautiful, even dressed in a travel-worn gown.

“Camberwick!” Monty’s greeting brought him back to his senses. The earl patted him on the back. “So glad you could come.” His friend gestured to his other guests. “You know Mr Selverton, of course, and Master Edmund.”

He removed his hat and dipped his head in greeting. “Of course, it is good to see you again, Mr Selverton. And Master Edmund, I have not seen you since you were a young whippersnapper. How are you enjoying Oxford?”

“I am in my final year, Lord Camberwick.”

Lady Montgomery approached. “Welcome, Lord Camberwick.” The firm line of her mouth suggested she was anything but pleased to see him.

“I was about to see my family to their rooms. You may wish to refresh yourself after your long journey.”

Phili—no, he should maintain formalities even in his head—Miss Selverton drew up alongside her sister.

“Miss Selverton.” He bowed, and she curtsied. “It is a pleasure to see you again.”

“And you, Lord Camberwick. I hope you are in good health.”

“As always, Miss Selverton.”

A small smile tilted her lips. What he would give to greet her with more than a polite bow. But it was not to be.

“Now that all are re-acquainted, let me show you to your room, Philippa. We want you to look your best for this evening.” Lady Montgomery tucked her hand into the crook of her sister’s elbow and led her up the stairs.

His gaze lingered on the pair until they disappeared.

Monty cleared his throat, drawing his attention. His friend’s brow rose in question. Dear God, he should be more circumspect.
