Critters on Tour: “Ruined” by Liza O’Connor

Lady Anne

Book One

-Ruined-

Blurb

Upon the death of her father, her Guardian, “The Honorable Robert Conrad” married her at sixteen to a vicious beast named Gerard Candor, the Marquis de Coeur. Her ‘husband’ would bring friends with him when he would arrive to provide her the small pittance she was expected to live on.

If she allowed them to use her body, then she would receive her money. If she fought them, she would be brutally beaten and receive no money.

Recognizing her need for help, her friend, Tom, helped her establish a very fine private club at her estate. With the money she received from the club games, she begins to build a fine stable of horses for the gentlemen to ride.

When the Marquis de Coeur dies, Anne celebrates with her gentleman. While she will have less money, she is certain her life will be better now.

She couldn’t be more wrong…

EXCERPT

“I promised my father on his death bed I would not sell her estate or reduce her stipend. Between the two of us, I’ve no doubt we can prevent future losses. But there are insufficient funds remaining to support a four thousand pound a month stipend.”

“Why did your father ever agree to such a sum in the first place?”

“From what I could gather, he didn’t. Girard accepted the agreement in proxy. My father’s guilt over the marriage made him agree to it.”

“How much did her marriage bring?”

“Five hundred thousand pounds.”

Winston’s mouth dropped open in shock. “How on earth did your father lose five hundred thousand pounds in five years?”

“That is exactly what I am trying to understand.”

Winston’s brow furrowed in thought. “And so far the ledgers aren’t helping?”

“No. If the costs in these ledgers are accurate, my father should have most of his money left. The only absurd expenses I’ve found so far are the servants’ wages and his wife’s stipend. But I haven’t found anything which accounts for his investment losses.”

Winston’s eyes narrowed. “May I have your permission to quietly search Girard’s private quarters?”

Aaron looked at Winston a long moment. “I think that’s an excellent idea.”

***

Less than two hours later, after Winston discovered the hidden ledgers, Aaron knew exactly what had happened to his father’s money. Unfortunately, he had little hope of getting any of it back.

Over the next week, Aaron filed charges against Girard and obtained a letter from French authorities requesting English officials to secure and return any funds remaining in Girard’s bank accounts. He doubted the English would take action in this matter with any speed. If Girard didn’t return to France so the French police could arrest him, he would have plenty of time to withdraw the money and disappear forever.

“Winston. I need you to travel to England and use your British charm to speed matters along.”
