The Ravenels Book 6
Railway magnate, Tom Severin has everything he ever wanted; money, power, and everything that goes with it. Yet, he wants more. His recent dissatisfaction with life can only be filled with one thing, a wife. Only one woman will do.
Lady Cassandra Ravenel wants a husband but cannot seem to find anyone amongst the aristocracy who can keep her interest. Tom Severin, however, is a challenge she cannot resist, but she refuses to marry a man who admitted he is incapable of loving her in return.
I was looking forward to a book featuring the railway magnate Tom Severin. His disregard for the rules of high society and high-handed attitude caught my attention from his first appearance in the Ravenel series. I was dying for him to be brought down by a no-nonsense heroine who put him in his arrogant place. However, Cassandra is not that type of heroine. She is just another “Mary Jane” character; she is beautiful beyond compare, the perfect lady who longs to find a husband to love.
Severin was also not as difficult to tame as I was lead to believe in earlier novels. He practically falls in lust at first sight with Cassandra in the first chapter and from then it’s just him trying to convince himself he is not in love with her.
Despite my disappointment with the characters I still enjoyed the story. Yet it seems nothing in this series seems to recapture the feels for me that were evoked by “Marrying Winterborne”.
As with her other books, Kleypas includes some lovely tender moments between the characters, as well as some hot and steamy scenes, but the plot is fairly standard without anything that packs a punch. Everything falls into place easily for characters with very little conflict, which is what I think leads to lack of butterflies for me.
