My Review: “Never Seduce a Scot” by Maya Banks

The Montgomery’s and Armstrong’s #1

Following a riding accident that left her deaf, Eveline Armstrong, has allowed others to believe she is mentally incompetent and mute. When the king demands an alliance between her clan and their hated enemy, the Montgomerys, Eveline now faces an uncertain future without the protection of her family.

Graeme Montgomery hates the Armstrongs beyond measure, but to go against the king would be tantamount to treason. Not only will he have to marry his enemy, but marriage to a simple woman, who can’t be a proper wife and provide an heir, risks the future of his bloodline.

At first I paid attention to the author’s use of sound in the differing characters. There’s definitely no mention of it with Eveline, which was true to character, but I didn’t notice much difference with the others. I felt like the author did a decent job to make Eveline’s struggles and experiences with deafness realistic for the time period.

Graeme is an extremely decent guy, a man of conscience and integrity, as well as a warrior chieftain with a commanding presence.

There was no mention of kilts or tartan, and I found it hard to place the period. From the description of Eveline’s gowns I guessed at medieval, but I ended up looking up the dates for the reign of Alexander II which allowed me to place the story in the eleventh century.

After they marry, the pace lagged with chapter after chapter of mundane stuff and only one love scene to enliven it. It picked up again when the plot moved on with some much needed drama, but everything was wrapped up too easily within a few chapters. It’s a nice, steady, love story, but I prefer a bit more excitement and heat, especially from one set in medieval Scotland.
