My Review: “The Hunter” by L J Shen

Boston Belles #1

I finished this book a while ago, but when I came back to write the review and found I’d made no notes. Please bear with me while I dig into the recesses of my mind and vow never to do this again.

Hunter Fitzpatrick is a character from the All Saints’ High series, which I haven’t finished yet, but his story kicks off a new series where the action moves from California to Boston.

Hunter is the typical rich kid: Arrogant, over-sexed, rapidly developing an alcohol problem, and fighting against the direction of his life which has been mapped out for him since birth. When he’s filmed having a group orgy that’s then an internet sensation, it’s the final straw for his family. To protect his inheritance he has to return to Boston, work for his family, and study for the next six months. He also has to be teetotal and celibate, all under the watchful eye of a babysitter.

That babysitter is dowdy, yet dedicated, Olympic hopeful and old family friend, Sailor Brennan. Babysitting Hunter is the nightmare she could do without, but she needs his family’s support to secure her place at the Olympics. As expected, she vows not to be tempted by the gorgeous player, but the reader knows that such a vow was made to be broken.

As always with this author, the characters are layered and there’s a lot more to them than meets the eye. Hunter may be arrogant, but he’s been shaped by his dysfunctional family. Sailor also has her own demons to overcome as well as her lack of self-esteem.

Throw in their interfering families, and you’ve got a good love story with plenty of angst, feels, and self-discovery. As usual, the sex is burning up the pages hot, and there’s plenty of it. It’s reignited my love be of L J Shen, and I’ll be going back to finish the All Saints High series, so be prepared for more reviews.
