My Review: “The Devil in Winter” by Lisa Kleypas

The Wallflowers Book 3

I don’t re-read a lot, but I felt like digging into something I knew I would enjoy. I loved this when I first read it. It gets mixed reactions from some due to Sebastian kidnapping and threatening to rape the heroine in the previous book in the series.

In the first few pages I was reminded of just how horrid and crass Sebastian is:

“I’d never be so beorgeois to lust after my own wife… Of cousrse, there is the issue of providing me with an heir… but as long as you’re discreet, I don’t expect I’ll give a damn whose child it is.”

After that little set down, I cringed on Evie’s behalf.

I thought Evie was so brave, venturing into Sebastian’s house, especially after he threatened her friend. She has an underlying strength which is admirable. From page one it’s hard to find anything to like about Sebastian, except his caustic self-deprecating whit.

Evie proves she is not one to be charmed by his angelic looks and silver tongue. She demonstrates steely determination, which only makes him want her more, because she refuses to succumb.

Evie also calls him out regarding his threat of rape in the previous book. He proves he’s not as despicable as he would like others to believe. His behaviour in the second half of the book is enough for me to forgive him, but may not be enough for some.

There are fewer steamy scenes in this book, mainly because Evie demands he proves himself by agreeing to three months of celibacy before she will sleep with him again. Apart from that, I experienced the same level of swoons and feels regarding Sebastian and Evie as I did during my first reading. Mainly because they are both so determined not to fall for each other, yet they fall so hard.
