Only a miracle can grant their hearts’ desires.

Miss Philippa Selverton is given an ultimatum: marry a rich man or become a companion to her aunt. Pippa can no longer be a burden to her impoverished family, and she would prefer to marry rather than become an unpaid servant. The problem is her heart already belongs to a penniless viscount.

After his father’s financial mismanagement, Lord Tristan Camberwick’s estate is failing. Despite the viscount’s best efforts to improve his income, it seems he has no choice but to find a rich wife. Unfortunately, Tristan’s heart only wants Philippa.

An invitation to a Christmas house party should allow Pippa and Tristan to find wealthy spouses. But how can they court a suitable partner when the only one they want stands across the room looking back?

The door to the music room opened.

Her stomach fluttered at the sight of Lord Camberwick’s dark curls.

Their gazes met, and he headed straight towards her. The butterflies inside her became a swarm.

As usual, deep creases marred his brow, and his mouth remained a firm line. His sullen countenance only enhanced his handsome face and turned her heart to mush.

She rested a palm on the glossy lid of the pianoforte, if only to prevent her hands from fidgeting. Unease slithered up her spine when the silence continued. Say something! “Did you enjoy your port, Lord Camberwick?”

“Indeed, Miss Selverton.”

The awkward silence resumed.

She blurted out the first thing that came to mind, “How was your journey from Yorkshire?”

“As well as could be expected at this time of year. The roads were busy, but they were dry, even though the journey was cold.”

“Thankfully, we have been spared from snow thus far.”

“At least we need not worry about the weather for the next month.” The furrow between his brows deepened. Her fingers itched to rub the lines away. If only she could erase the worries that caused them. Instead, she said, “We will be safe and warm here.”

He placed his palm on the pianoforte, his stance a mirror of hers. Oh, that he could come closer. “I believe we are to have an evening of music.”

Her fingers twitched against the glossy surface. She resisted the urge to touch him. “Yes.”

“Will you play?” His ice-blue gaze bored into her.

Heat flooded her cheeks. “Yes.”

Finally, the firm line of his mouth tilted at the tips. “Come, Miss Selverton, we have known each other these past five years. Surely, we can manage a more meaningful conversation than bland pleasantries.”
